In her memo, Bondi stated that the creation of the task force will serve to protect the rights of gun owners across the nation, with a specific focus on defending the Second Amendment from overreach.
“For too long, the Second Amendment, which establishes the fundamental individual right of Americans to keep and bear arms, has been treated as a second-class right. No more,” she said, emphasizing the department’s commitment to ensuring that gun ownership remains a protected right.
Bondi’s announcement is part of the broader effort by the Justice Department to strengthen gun owners’ rights in the face of increasing scrutiny and regulatory challenges, Just the News reports. This effort has drawn praise from various lawmakers and gun rights advocates who argue that the Second Amendment is increasingly under threat by restrictive regulations.
Rep. Riley M. Moore (R-WV), a strong advocate for gun rights, responded positively to the creation of the task force, calling the Second Amendment “the premier constitutional right.”
“The Second Amendment is the premier constitutional right because it guards all others,” he wrote on X.

The new task force is set to focus on a wide range of issues that affect gun owners, with the goal of ensuring that federal policies do not infringe upon their rights.
The announcement comes on the heels of a significant development in federal firearm regulations. FBI Director Kash Patel recently moved to dismantle the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Zero Tolerance Policy, which had been criticized for targeting gun stores with minor violations, per the outlet.
This controversial policy had been implemented in previous years and was accused of unjustly shutting down gun stores across the country. Many critics of the policy claimed that it was used to target businesses with minor infractions and that it contributed to an illegal digital registry of out-of-business records.
The repeal of this policy marks a pivotal shift in how the ATF will approach the regulation of firearms dealers.

“Today’s repeal of the Zero Tolerance Policy and the comprehensive review of stabilizing brace regulations and the definition of ‘engaged in the business’ marks a pivotal step toward restoring fairness and clarity in firearms regulation,” Patel said, according to Just the News. “We are committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure our policies are balanced, constitutional, and protective of Americans’ Second Amendment rights.”
Patel’s statement reflects a growing recognition within the Justice Department of the need for clearer and more transparent regulations that protect the rights of law-abiding gun owners while ensuring public safety. The task force, alongside the repeal of the Zero Tolerance Policy, represents a clear shift away from overregulation and towards a more protective stance for gun owners.
This new direction is also reflected in the broader review of regulations surrounding firearm accessories, such as stabilizing braces and the definition of what constitutes “engaged in the business” of selling firearms. These reviews are expected to clarify some of the most contentious issues facing gun owners today.
The creation of the Second Amendment Task Force and the policy changes led by Patel are expected to play a significant role in the ongoing debate over gun rights in America. As lawmakers, advocates and federal agencies work together, the task force is expected to be a key player in ensuring that the Second Amendment continues to be upheld as a fundamental right for all Americans.
