SCOTUS Justice Slams Trump Over Controversial Deportations in Rare Public Rebuke

Chief Justice John Roberts has pushed back against President Donald Trump following the president’s call to impeach a federal judge who blocked deportations of alleged Venezuelan gang members in a rare public rebuke.

The clash began when Trump labeled Judge James Boasberg a “radical left lunatic” on social media after Boasberg temporarily halted the deportation of over 200 individuals the administration claimed were members of the Tren de Aragua gang.

“For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision,” Roberts said in a statement issued by the Supreme Court. “The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose.”

While Roberts did not mention Trump by name, the timing of the statement—just hours after Trump’s social media attack—made the target clear, the Daily Mail highlighted.

The Chief Justice suggested that if the administration disagrees with a ruling, it should pursue appeals through proper legal channels rather than publicly attacking a Senate-confirmed judge.

Trump’s social media post declared that Boasberg “should be IMPEACHED!!!” and stated: “WE DON’T WANT VICIOUS, VIOLENT, AND DEMENTED CRIMINALS, MANY OF THEM DERANGED MURDERERS, IN OUR COUNTRY.”

When asked about Roberts’ statement during an interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham, Trump noted, “Well, he didn’t mention my name in the statement. I just saw it quickly. He didn’t mention my name.” 

He added that “many people have called for his impeachment, the impeachment of this judge. I don’t know who the judge is, but he’s radical left,” Daily Mail outlined.

The controversy stems from Judge Boasberg’s ruling blocking deportations after the administration invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, TTOA previously reported.

The U.S. paid El Salvador $6 million to accept the deportees who the White House described as members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The administration has refused to release names of those now incarcerated in El Salvador.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Steven Miller criticized the judge’s order as “illegal,” stating: “The idea that a single district court judge has the authority to direct, as though they were the president, the movement of airplanes around the globe is… the most outrageous thing I’ve seen from a district court judge in my lifetime.”

This judicial conflict emerges amid a broader pattern of federal court rulings restraining Trump administration actions. Daily Mail highlighted that a federal judge in California ordered the reinstatement of thousands of fired “probationary” employees last week, while another judge in Maryland issued a similar ruling declaring such terminations illegal.

The Chief Justice’s Supreme Court currently holds a 6-3 conservative majority that has backed Trump in previous cases, making his public rebuke particularly noteworthy. 

The clash occurs amid broader tensions between the Trump administration and the judiciary. 

The Daily Mail reported that earlier this month, the American Bar Association warned against attempts to “cow our country’s judges, our country’s courts and our legal profession,” stating intimidation “cannot be sanctioned or normalized.”

The ABA emphasized in February that it would not “stay silent in the face of efforts to remake the legal profession into something that rewards those who agree with the government and punishes those who do not.”

DOGE leader Elon Musk has been vocal about impeaching judges ruling against the administration. In February, Musk posted: “When judges egregiously undermine the democratic will of the people, they must be fired or democracy dies!”
