TTOA reported Monday that multiple sources close to the situation expected Trudeau to announce his resignation before a crucial national caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday.
Trump took to Truth Social to promote his vision of Canadian statehood, claiming widespread Canadian support for the idea.
“Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State,” Trump declared, suggesting that such a merger would eliminate trade barriers and enhance security for both nations.
“Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned,” the president-elect continued.
“Together, what a great Nation it would be,” he added at the end of this social media post.
The timing of Trump’s statements, coming directly after Trudeau’s resignation announcement, has intensified attention on the complex relationship between the two countries.
Fox News outlined that earlier Monday Trudeau revealed his intention to step down as both Prime Minister and Liberal Party leader, citing internal party conflicts that he believes could hamper his effectiveness in future elections.
“I intend to resign as party leader, as Prime Minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationwide competitive process,” Trudeau stated in his morning address.
The announcement, delivered outside Rideau Cottage, came nearly two years after Trudeau’s contentious showdown with thousands of truckers who paralyzed Ottawa in protest of vaccine mandates.
CNN black sheep contributor Scott Jennings didn’t mince words about the connection between these events, Daily Mail reported.
“There’s a direct line between those truckers and what’s happening today,” Jennings declared on CNN News Central, moments before Trudeau’s official announcement.
His commentary highlighted the lasting impact of the 2022 Freedom Convoy protests that rocked Canada’s capital.
Trudeau’s administration’s response included invoking the Emergencies Act, a move that authorized police to clear protesters and freeze financial assets.
Daily Mail highlighted that GoFundMe froze over $8 million in donations meant for the protesters, while supporters faced threats of personal bank account freezes.
This led to accusations of government overreach.
The protest’s suppression came at a steep political cost.
A woman and man were trampled by a police horse during the Ottawa demonstrations, despite police claims that no serious injuries occurred.
Trudeau’s administration further damaged its credibility by attempting to frame protesters as “Russian actors,” per Daily Mail.
During his resignation speech, Trudeau avoided mentioning the Freedom Convoy controversy, instead focusing on his legacy of public service.
“I’m a fighter. Every bone in my body has always told me to fight because I care deeply about Canadians,” he stated, delivering his message in both English and French.
TTOA previously highlighted that his decision follows months of declining approval ratings and growing public dissatisfaction over economic challenges, including inflation and rising living costs.
The resignation announcement was preceded by significant internal party turmoil, most notably the departure of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
Her resignation letter criticized Trudeau’s economic policy decisions and referenced concerns about Trump’s recent threats toward Canada.
These developments follow a previously undisclosed November meeting between Trump and Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago, per sources.
Fox reported that the meeting, prompted by Trump’s threats of imposing 25 percent tariffs on Canadian products, addressed multiple bilateral concerns, including illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
Trump’s proposed tariffs target both Canada and Mexico, whom he accuses of failing to adequately address the flow of illegal immigrants and illicit drugs into the United States.
Following the November meeting, Trump highlighted these issues on social media, stating, “We discussed many important topics that will require both countries to work together to address, like the fentanyl and drug crisis that has decimated so many lives as a result of illegal immigration, fair trade deals that do not jeopardize American workers and the massive trade deficit the U.S. has with Canada.”
