Abortion was the Leading Cause of Death in 2024, With Over 45 Million Killed
As 2025 kicks in, it has been revealed that abortion was the leading cause of death globally in 2024, with over 45 million unborn children killed in the womb.
The startling information was provided by Worldometer, a reference website recognized by the American Library Association for its comprehensive global statistics. The website reported that 45.1 million abortions had been performed worldwide as of noon on New Year’s Eve, according to Breitbart News.
This figure represents 42 percent of all deaths globally for the year, compared to 62.5 million total deaths from all other causes.
By comparison, cancer claimed 8.2 million lives, smoking resulted in 5 million deaths, HIV/AIDS accounted for 1.7 million deaths, traffic accidents caused 1.35 million fatalities and suicide resulted in 1.1 million deaths. Abortions in 2024 outnumbered the combined deaths from cancer, malaria, HIV/AIDS, smoking, alcohol and traffic fatalities, demonstrating the magnitude of the procedure’s global impact.
Worldometer’s abortion statistics are drawn from the latest figures provided by the World Health Organization. The organization tracks global health data, including abortions, as part of its mandate to monitor public health trends. Worldometer’s running tallies are frequently referenced for real-time insights into population growth, mortality rates, and other key metrics.
Going further to illustrate the ongoing scale of abortions, Worldometer reports that over 185,000 abortions have already been performed globally in the first two days of 2025, as of noon on Jan. 2.
In the U.S. alone, abortion accounted for roughly a third of all deaths annually, making it a significant contributor to national mortality rates. Even more startling, it represented over 60 percent of African American deaths, based on a study published in the Open Journal of Preventive Medicine in 2016.
This disparity has amplified concerns among pro-life advocates, who see abortion as a human rights issue that disproportionately affects minority communities.
In contrast to these abortion figures, President Joe Biden cited gun violence as the leading cause of death for children in the U.S. in several speeches last year. His claim was based on data from the New England Journal of Medicine’s 2022 article titled, “Current Causes of Death in Children and Adolescents in the United States,” which covered individuals aged 1 to 19, excluding infants under one year old.
Critics have pointed out that this framing excludes significant data on mortality among younger age groups, particularly infants, and fails to consider the impact of abortion on overall child mortality.
Pro-life advocates worldwide have referred to abortion as “the social justice cause of our time,” citing its sheer scale as overshadowing other human rights issues. While debates over abortion rights and legislation continue, the data from 2024 underscores the global prevalence of abortion as a leading cause of death.
The staggering statistics have sparked disgust among social media users.
“To all of you on the left complaining about guns, here’s a way to stop the killing of children! End abortion! I don’t want to hear another word from you about gun control!” one user wrote on X.
Another user described abortion as “the holocaust of our generation,” highlighting the enormity of the issue, while a third commented, “I guess we are in the midst of WW3, with babies as the enemy.”
