Jimmy Carter’s Death Could Affect Trump’s Inauguration in Surprising Way as Vengeful Dems Boast About Former President’s ‘Final Act of Service’
In an unexpected convergence of events, traditional presidential protocols following Jimmy Carter’s passing may impact the atmosphere of Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration.
The former president’s death on Sunday afternoon has triggered a longstanding federal requirement that could affect the ceremonial aspects of Inauguration Day.
Carter, who passed away at age 100, entered American history books as the nation’s 39th president.
His death, coming just 22 days before Trump’s scheduled January 20 inauguration, has activated standard federal protocols requiring flags to be flown at half-mast for 30 days following a former president’s death.
Daily Mail reported that the United States Department of Veteran Affairs mandates that all federal buildings, grounds and naval vessels must lower their flags for this duration as a symbol of national mourning.
“I’m so sad for this great man’s passing but this is going to p**s off the orange clown so much and I’ve convinced myself this was Jimmy’s plan the whole time,” one X user wrote, per the outlet, as another said, “Can’t help but smile knowing flags will be at half mast during Trump’s inauguration to honor Jimmy Carter.”
This timing means the requirement will be in effect during the inauguration ceremonies.
The coincidence has sparked widespread social media discussion, with various political commentators noting the timing.
“DemocRATS made the official announcement at this time to ensure the flags would be flown at half-mast during the second inauguration,” one Trump supporter posted, per Daily Mail.
Democratic supporters have highlighted the overlap, while Trump supporters have expressed frustration at the situation, with some advancing unsubstantiated theories about the timing of Carter’s death announcement.
The relationship between Carter and Trump had been marked by public disagreements.
Daily Mail highlighted that during a 2018 appearance on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Carter delivered pointed criticism of Trump.
When host Colbert asked if America wanted “kind of a jerk as president,” Carter responded, “Apparently, from this recent election, yes. I never knew it before.”
Trump, in turn, had frequently criticized Carter during campaign speeches, continuing his verbal attacks even after Carter’s 100th birthday.
Following Carter’s death, however, Trump issued a statement acknowledging that the nation “owed the 39th president a ‘debt of gratitude’ for his service.”
President Joe Biden has announced that Carter will receive a state funeral, with his body scheduled to lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda on January 9.
“To honor a great American,” Biden stated, he would order an official state funeral in Washington D.C. for Carter, whom he described as having “gave his full life in service to God and country.”
Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, transitioned from peanut farmer to the White House and subsequently dedicated his post-presidential years to charitable work.
His passing comes nearly two years after entering hospice care.
