Elton John Unveils Bombshell Medical News On-Stage: ‘I Have Lost My Sight’
Music legend Sir Elton John made a poignant revelation at London’s Dominion Theatre, announcing he has completely lost his sight during the red carpet launch of “The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical.”
The 77-year-old icon, who composed the musical’s score, delivered the news while addressing the audience alongside his husband David Furnish.
The multiple Grammy winner credited his husband Furnish, 62, as his “rock” during this challenging period.
“As some of you may know I have had issues and now I have lost my sight. I haven’t been able to see the performance but I have enjoyed it,” John told the gathered crowd.
“To my husband who’s been my rock because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews… it’s hard for me to see it,” John continued.
“But I love to hear it and it sounded good tonight OK. Thank you for coming!”
Daily Mail reported that the admission comes after months of deteriorating vision, which began with an infection in his right eye last summer while in France.
The severity of his condition has significantly impacted his ability to perform basic tasks, including reading and watching performances of his own work.
Speaking to ABC News about his documentary “Never Too Late,” John elaborated on how his vision loss affects his career prospects.
“It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see. And my left eye is not the greatest,” he explained, adding that the condition has particularly affected his ability to record new music, as he cannot read lyrics.
“We’re taking an initiative to try and get it better, but at the moment that’s really what we’re concentrating on,” John said.
Sir Elton John told fans he had lost his eyesight and could not see the stage at a red carpet launch on Sunday night.

Daily Mail noted that despite these challenges, John maintains an optimistic outlook.
“I’m so lucky, I’m the luckiest man in the world,” he declared, expressing pride in his documentary, his sons, and his attitude toward his current situation.
The vision problems add to a series of health challenges the “Rocket Man” singer has faced in recent years.
He previously underwent knee replacements and hip surgery following a fall that delayed his farewell tour in 2021.
John had addressed his initial vision problems on Instagram last September, describing it as an “extremely slow process” of healing.
Daily Mail highlighted that the premiere itself drew an impressive array of celebrities, including Elizabeth Hurley, Lily Collins, and Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
The musical, featuring lyrics by Shaina Taub and book by Kate Wetherhead, marks another milestone in John’s illustrious theater career, which includes successful productions like “The Lion King” and “Billy Elliot.”
