George W’s Daughter Barbara Endorses Kamala Harris
Former President George W. Bush’s daughter, Barbara, announced over the weekend that she would be endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris.
Bush, an advocate of Planned Parenthood, told People Magazine that she was “hopeful” that women’s rights would be protected.
“It was inspiring to join friends and meet voters with the Harris-campaign in Pennsylvania this weekend. I’m hopeful they’ll move our country forward and protect women’s rights,” said Bush.
The 42-year-old is no stranger for her stance on abortion rights. Speaking at a Planned Parenthood fundraiser in 2017, Bush shared that she was “proud” to be a women’s rights advocate, per the New York Post.
“I am proud to stand with Planned Parenthood not only because women, regardless of where they are from, deserve to live dignified, healthy lives, [but] … because it’s a really good investment,” she said in 2017, per The Texas Tribune. “We know that when women are healthy, their families and their children are healthier, too.”
While her father and paternal grandfather, George H.W. Bush, were both Republican presidents, Bush identifies as an independent, stating that she doesn’t affiliate with either political party.
Bush’s endorsement comes as no surprise, as former President Donald Trump has often criticized her father’s two terms as president, calling it “a failed and uninspiring presidency,” per the Daily Mail.
Bush is no stranger to hitting the campaign trail. In 2004, she helped her father campaign in the swing states. The same year, she also spoke at the Republican National Convention, according to The Post.
Bush shares beliefs with her mother, former first lady Laura Bush, who also clashed with the Republican Party over abortion rights and same-sex marriage.
Bush’s parents have declined to endorse a presidential candidate for 2024.
Bush is not the only daughter of a White House politician to endorse Harris. Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, also endorsed Harris and has been helping her on the campaign trail.
In an X post, Cheney praised Bush for her endorsement.
“Thank you, Barbara Bush, for standing for truth, decency, and freedom,” she wrote on X.
Trump has also criticized Cheney’s father, slamming his involvement with the war on Iraq.
“Her father was responsible for invading the Middle East, killing millions of Arabs – millions – and this is the one that Kamala is campaigning with,” Trump said in Michigan on Saturday.
