Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign is facing a critical moment of reckoning, according to renowned pollster Frank Luntz, who pinpointed the precise turning point when her campaign began to unravel.
Despite what Luntz described as “the best 60 days of any presidential candidate in modern history,” Harris’s campaign trajectory took a sharp downturn when she shifted her focus to attacking President Donald Trump.
Daily Mail reported that during a CNN interview Wednesday, Luntz, nicknamed “the nostradamus of pollsters,” explained that Harris’s campaign hit a wall when she adopted an anti-Trump strategy.
“The moment she turned anti-Trump and focused on him and said ‘don’t vote for me, vote against him.’ That’s when everything froze,” Luntz stated.
Recent polling data supports Luntz’s assessment, Daily Mail outlined.
A New York Times/Siena College poll revealed Harris significantly trailing Joe Biden’s 2020 performance in New York City.
While Harris leads Trump 66 percent to 27 percent among likely voters in NYC, this represents an 11-point decline from Biden’s 2020 numbers, where he secured 76 percent of the vote compared to Trump’s 23 percent.
The vice president’s recent CNN town hall in Pennsylvania further complicated her campaign narrative, Daily Mail highlighted.
When asked about her weaknesses by retail worker Joe Donahue, Harris admitted to struggling with quick thinking.
“I may not be quick to have the answer about a specific policy issue sometimes,” she confessed, adding, “I’m kind of a nerd sometimes, I confess.”
Harris’s campaign has recently taken a controversial turn, employing increasingly aggressive rhetoric against Trump.
She sparked debate by labeling him a “fascist” and drawing parallels to Hitler, citing former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly’s statements to the New York Times.
Kelly, who served from 2017 to 2019, claimed Trump expressed admiration for Hitler’s economic achievements and desired staff loyalty similar to “German generals in World War II.”
However, this aggressive strategy has faced pushback from within Democratic ranks.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams publicly criticized Harris’s rhetoric, particularly her Hitler comparisons.
“I know what Hitler has done, and I know what a fascist regime looks like,” Adams stated, calling for all parties to “dial down the temperature.”
The campaign’s challenges extend beyond rhetoric.
Daily Mail emphasized that Harris now trails Trump in crucial swing states including Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, according to Real Clear Politics.
Democratic strategists are expressing growing concern about the campaign’s direction.
One unnamed strategist said, “Yes, it’s close, but are things trending our way? No. And no one wants to openly admit that.”
With just days until the election, Harris faces mounting pressure to reverse these trends.
While her campaign has taken bold steps, including partnerships with Liz Cheney and holding rallies in traditionally red Texas, another Democratic strategist bluntly assessed, “If this is a vibe election, the current vibes ain’t great.”
