Elon Musk Validates Trump’s Previous Response to NATO
Elon Musk stated that everything that former President Donald Trump said in a NATO video was “extremely accurate.”
In an X post on Thursday morning, the billionaire reshared a video showing a past meeting between NATO while Trump was in office.
“Everything he said there was extremely accurate,” wrote Musk.
Musk was referring to a video that was posted by the X account End Wokeness showing Trump laying into NATO members about Germany’s dealings with Russia.
In the video, Trump discussed Germany’s energy policy, criticizing the country for making a significant oil deal with Russia while being a member of NATO.
He argued that Germany’s dependence on Russian oil made it vulnerable and questioned the wisdom of such an agreement, suggesting it could undermine Germany’s energy security.
“So we’re supposed to be protecting you against Russia, but they are paying billions of dollars to Russia, and I think that’s very inappropriate,” said Trump.
“It should have never been allowed to happen,” he continued, “but Germany is totally controlled by Russia because they will be getting from 60 to 70 percent of their energy from Russia and a new pipeline.”
“And you tell me, if that’s appropriate because I think it’s not and NATO and I think it’s a very bad for NATO and I don’t think it should happen.”
During the meeting, Trump highlighted that the U.S. was contributing a higher percentage of its GDP (Gross Domestic Product) to NATO compared to other member countries. GDP measures the total monetary value of all goods and services produced within a nation’s borders over a specific time period, typically calculated annually or quarterly.
As president, Trump took a hardline approach to NATO, criticizing member countries for failing to meet their defense spending commitments. Many conservatives, including Musk, praised him for this stance, claiming he accomplished more for NATO than any previous president.
Trump’s approach resulted in more NATO members increasing their military budgets, which conservatives viewed as a way to hold allies accountable for their defense commitments. They saw this as a strengthening of the alliance overall. Some foreign leaders also expressed Trump’s positive impact on NATO, as Newsweek reported in 2021.
As a result of his continued criticism, some of the NATO countries committed to raising their defense budgets.
While in office, Trump used a combination of assertive diplomacy, economic pressure, and military policies to keep other countries in check, most notably by imposing tariffs and sanctions on countries like China and Iran.
In doing so, he challenged the trade practices, which he saw were unfair and prevented them from developing nuclear weapons programs.
