JD Vance Masterfully Counters Debate Mod’s Fact Check Before Having Mic Cut, Sparking Mixed Reactions
In a contentious moment during Tuesday night’s CBS News Vice Presidential Debate, Senator JD Vance’s microphone was abruptly cut off as he attempted to address claims about Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio.
This move by CBS led to immediate backlash from viewers.
The shocking moment unfolded when CBS moderator Margaret Brennan interjected during Vance’s discussion of illegal immigration’s impact on American communities.
Despite the network’s prior announcement that live fact-checking would not occur during the debate, Brennan interrupted Vance to clarify the legal status of Haitian migrants in Springfield.
“Just to clarify for our viewers, Springfield, Ohio does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status, temporary protected status,” Brennan interjected.
Vance then swiftly punched back.
“The rules were that you guys weren’t going to fact-check,” Vance pointed out before attempting to explain the current situation.
“And since you are fact-checking me, I think it’s important to say what’s actually going on.”
He began detailing the CBP One app, describing it as a tool where “illegal migrants [can] apply for asylum or apply for parole and be granted legal status at the wave of a Kamala Harris open border wand.”
“That is not a person coming in applying for a green card and waiting for 10 years — ”
As Vance tried to complete his explanation about Vice President Harris’s role in the immigration crisis, the network cut his microphone, with Brennan stating, “The audience can’t hear you because your mics are cut. We have so much we want to get to.”
Critics were quick to call out the debate moderators for “violating their own rules” by fact-checking Vance.
Fox News’ Bill Melugin posted, “CBS cuts Vance’s mic while he’s explaining how the Biden/Harris admin has allowed over 800,000 migrants to enter the U.S. via the CBP One App ‘lawfully.’”
“It then sounded like Walz claimed the CBP One app has been used since the 90s, which is completely false,” he continued.
“The Biden/Harris admin started using it in winter 2023 to begin mass paroling migrants into the country by the hundreds of thousands, typically between 1,300-1,500 every single day.”
Real-time focus group data revealed significant reactions to the interruption, Fox reported.
While both Republican and independent voters showed disapproval of the moderator’s interjection, independent voter approval notably decreased when Vance began explaining his stance.
However, when the microphones were cut, independent voter approval actually increased as Republican approval slightly declined.
Daily Caller reported that the CBP One app, launched in October 2020 and expanded under the Biden administration in January 2023, allows migrants to schedule appointments for port of entry exemptions.
The app specifically enables Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan and Venezuelan migrants to submit biometric information to apply for travel authorization and parole.
This debate highlighted the ongoing tension surrounding immigration policy discussions, with Vance attempting to draw attention to what he views as concerning changes in immigration procedures under the current administration.
The controversial moment occurred as Vance was responding to Walz, who had argued that certain immigration laws “have been on the books since 1990.”
Before his microphone was silenced, Vance was attempting to challenge this claim, specifically regarding the CBP One app’s role in current immigration processes.
