Trump Tells Ukrainian President ‘It Takes Two To Tango’ After Mentioning Good Relationship With Russia
Former President Donald Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that “it takes two to tango” when the foreign leader expressed wanting the U.S. to have a good relationship with his country as they met in New York Friday morning.
Speaking to reporters ahead of their meeting, Trump said that his relationship with Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin was “very good.”
“I think if we win, we’re going to get it resolved very quickly,” Trump, in reference to Russia’s war with Ukraine. “We’re going to work very much with both parties to try and get this settled.”
“I hope we have more good relations,” Zelenskyy said, per The Hill.
“Oh, I see,” Trump responded. “But it takes two to tango, you know. And we’re going to have a good meeting today. And I think the fact that we’re even together today is a very good sign.”
The exchange occurred in New York Friday morning at Trump Tower as the foreign leader met with the former president. The two leaders have been critical of each other as the Biden-Harris administration continues to fund Ukraine during the war.
Zelenskyy has been under fire as Republicans criticized him for a recent interview he did where he called Trump’s running mate, Republican Ohio Sen. JD Vance, “too radical” and doubted that Trump was able to stop the war.
“My feeling is that Trump doesn’t really know how to stop the war even if he might think he knows how,” Zelenskyy told The New Yorker. “With this war, oftentimes, the deeper you look at it the less you understand. I’ve seen many leaders who were convinced they knew how to end it tomorrow, and as they waded deeper into it, they realized it’s not that simple.”
Trump has also shared words about Zelenskyy, calling him the “greatest salesman on Earth” as he receives more U.S. funding for a war that he is unlikely to win, per ABC News.
The Ukrainian leader said he wanted to meet with Trump because they shared a common goal: ending the war quickly.
“I think we have [a] common view that the war in Ukraine has to be stopped and Putin can’t win. The Ukrainians have to prevail, and I want to discuss with you the details,” said Zelenskyy.
