Trump Cancels Visit to Kosher Deli After Owner Dies
Former President Donald Trump canceled his planned visit to a kosher deli in New York City Thursday after the owner died of a heart attack.
Before leaving to speak at a “Combating Antisemitism” event in Washington, D.C., Trump was scheduled to appear at Gottlieb’s located in Brooklyn.
Last week, Shalom Yosef Gottlieb, the deli’s owner, came down with pneumonia and succumbed to a heart attack earlier on Thursday, according to the New York Post.
Gottlieb’s father, a Holocaust survivor, founded the deli in 1962 and has been managed by his son Menashe for the last few years, the outlet noted.
Friends and religious leaders said that Gottlieb would hand out food to those in need on a regular basis.
“Let’s say someone came and told him their mother was sick, had to go to the hospital. He’d say, ‘How many portions do you need? Take it,’” said Rabbi Moshe Indig, a Jewish community leader. “Every Friday before closing he’d take all the leftovers and pack them up and send them to families.”
The outlet reported that Gottlieb was “surprised” when the Trump campaign chose his eatery to visit, seeing that he stayed out of politics.
“Everybody’s in shock. He was a good person, and he was an icon because of the iconic restaurant he ran for a very long time,” said, Rabbi Abe Friedman, a friend of Gottlieb.
“Going from welcoming Trump to a funeral is quite shocking.”
His funeral will be held Thursday afternoon.
Trump was in New York City for his Wednesday rally, held at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island, which was not without incident. Wednesday morning, there were reports of explosives being found in the area, which police later reported as false.
Before the rally kicked off, Trump made several stops, including making a special visit to an 8-year-old fan who has been battling a rare brain condition.
Liam Licastro had gone viral a week prior after he received a birthday letter from the former president and his wife, Melania.
On the memorable visit, which was caught on video, Trump walked in to greet the young fan and his parents.
“Where’s my beautiful Liam? I’m supposed to be on stage, but that doesn’t matter because I got you the best present you’ll ever have,” he said.
The former president also invited the family to be his VIP guests at the rally, according to Fox News. Trump also visited the Bitcoin bar, PubKey, where he became the first president to make a public purchase using Bitcoin.
