NYC Offering Illegal Immigrants $4,000 for Permanent Housing
In an effort to reduce overcrowding, New York City is offering illegal immigrants $4,000 to receive permanent housing and exit city shelters.
The city’s Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is offering approximately 150 families that are residing in the Big Apple unlawfully $4,000 each through the Asylee Moveout Assistance (AMA) program to help them pay for housing, per the Daily Caller.
The foreign nationals are also being offered $1,000 in gift cards to cover moving expenses, Fox News Digital reported.
The AMA program was created in December of last year to facilitate the housing process for illegal immigrants.
Beginning in December 2023, officials in the Big Apple handed out $4,000 to 150 families that are living in the city’s DHS shelters, according to Fox News Digital.
“The city is using every tool at its disposal to implement innovative and cost-effective solutions to help recently-arrived asylum seekers residing in shelters take the next steps in their journey,” a spokesperson for the Department of Social Services (DSS) told Fox News Digital.
“Since December, DSS has been working with a few not-for-profit providers operating emergency sites to pilot a new effort to reduce barriers to obtaining housing by helping asylum-seeking families who have identified permanent housing with the upfront cost of moving into their new home,” the spokesperson added.
“150 households have benefited from this pilot over the last seven months, and we look forward to supporting more households as we assess the success of the pilot and feasibility of scaling up and expanding access to this form of assistance,” a statement from DSS read, per Fox News Digital.
“This is a very small pilot only available to asylum-seeking families in select emergency shelters operated by DHS,” the spokesperson said. “This is not a citywide effort and not available to migrant families residing across the shelter system.”
As Fox News Digital reported, illegal immigrants who return to the city’s shelters will be ineligible to receive the payments again.
The DSS spokesperson said the funds come from within the agency, adding that the city is not funding the illegal immigrants.
Since President Joe Biden took office, New York has seen a surge in illegal immigration, with more than 200,000 foreign nationals arriving in the Big Apple, as ABC 7 reported in June.
The operation comes after New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) said the illegal immigration crisis would “destroy” the Empire State in September 2023.
“I’m gonna tell you something, New Yorkers, never in my life have I had a problem that I didn’t see an ending to,” Adams said last year. “I don’t see an ending to this. This issue will destroy New York City. Destroy New York City.”
“Month after month, I stood up and said this is gonna come to a neighborhood near you. Well, we’re here, we’re getting no support on the national crisis, and we’re receiving no support,” he added.
“All of us are going to be impacted by this. I said it last year when we had 15,000 and I’m telling you now with 110,000. The city we knew, we’re about to lose, and we are all in this together, all of us,” Adams said at the time, per the New York Post.
