Breaking: Multiple Casualties Reported After Georgia High School Shooting
An active shooter opened fire on Wednesday morning at a Georgia high school. So far, four people are confirmed to be dead and at least 30 injured, making it the deadliest school shooting in Georgia’s history.
Apalachee High School informed FOX 5 Atlanta that the school had been cleared and students were being sent home around 11:30 a.m.
The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office told the outlet that several law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, and emergency responders arrived at the school around 10:30 a.m. and confirmed that there was an active shooter on the school’s campus.
Colt Gray, a 14-year-old student, has been taken into custody, the sheriff’s office reported. He will be charged with murder and tried as an adult. Two students and two teachers were killed. Of the 30 individuals injured, nine are currently hospitalized.
One of those injured is David Phenix, a special education math teacher, who was shot in the foot and hip, as reported by the New York Post.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith held a news conference at 1:15 p.m. to give updated information. He said that law enforcement was helping parents and students be reunited.
“What you see behind us is an evil thing,” he said.
Sergio Caldera, a senior at the high school, told ABC News that he was in chemistry class when the shots rang out.
“My teacher goes and opens the door to see what’s going on. Another teacher comes running in and tells her to close the door because there’s an active shooter,” he said.
He recalled that his teacher locked the door, and everyone ran to the back of the room.
Caldera said that he could hear banging on the door and hear someone screaming, “open up!” multiple times. After the knocking stopped, he heard more gunshots.
Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp released a statement on X about the situation.
“I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state,” he wrote.
“We will continue to work with local, state, and federal partners as we gather information and further respond to this situation.”
President Joe Biden released a statement after learning of the shooting.
“Jill and I are mourning the deaths of those whose lives were cut short due to more senseless gun violence and thinking of all of the survivors whose lives are forever changed,” he said.
The investigation is still ongoing. The motive behind Gray’s decision to shoot up the school is currently unknown.
