Vance Fumbles Championship Trophy During Ohio State White House Visit: ‘I Decided to Break it’

Vice President JD Vance experienced a trophy mishap that quickly captured attention across social media and news outlets.

The awkward moment came during Monday’s White House ceremony honoring the Ohio State Buckeyes for their College Football Playoff national championship.

The Ohio State football team visited Washington to celebrate their January championship victory with President Donald Trump and Vance, himself an Ohio State alumnus.

As officials prepared for a photo opportunity with the team, Vance attempted to lift the championship trophy but struggled to maintain his grip on the prestigious award.

The trophy dramatically separated into two pieces when Vance lost control, with the pedestal base hitting the ground while team members, including running back TreVeyon Henderson, sprang into action.

Henderson and others around the vice president showed quick reflexes, helping prevent the ornate top portion from falling and potentially sustaining damage.

Despite multiple attempts to reassemble the trophy on the spot, Vance ultimately had to pose for photographs holding only the detached top section.

The incident created a momentary disruption in the otherwise celebratory atmosphere, drawing surprised looks from attendees and team members gathered for the ceremony.

Taking the incident in stride, Vance later posted on social media platform X: “I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it.”

During the ceremony, President Trump highlighted Vance’s connection to the university, praising the Vice President’s academic achievements during his time at the Ohio institution.

“He was such a good student, he didn’t stay there for four years,” Trump remarked. “He got out in two years, No. 1 in his class. How do you do that?”

Trump continued acknowledging Vance’s ties to the school, adding, “With us are many Ohio State fans from my administration. The biggest of them all of course is our vice president, who’s been fantastic — a faithful Buckeye alum, JD Vance.”

The New York Post highlighted that Vance completed his undergraduate degree at Ohio State in just two years, graduating in 2009 before continuing his education at Yale Law School.

The outlet further noted that the championship celebration marked another sports team visit to the White House under the current administration, following recent appearances by NHL champions the Florida Panthers and MLB champions the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Buckeyes’ visit commemorated their triumph in the College Football Playoff championship earlier this year, bringing together the team’s players and coaches with administration officials for the traditional White House recognition given to championship teams across various sports.

Vance made headlines last month after suggesting Vice President Kamala Harris’ speech patterns might be alcohol-induced during an interview.

The comments came as Vance discussed differences in vice-presidential approaches and relationships with their respective presidents, TTOA previously reported.

“Well, I don’t have four shots of vodka before every meeting,” Vance said during a radio interview with Daily Caller editor Vince Coglianese.

“That’s one way I think that Kamala really tried to bring herself into the role, is these word salads,” Vance continued.

“I think I would need the help of a lot of alcohol to answer a question the way that Kamala Harris answered questions.”
