As TTOA previously reported, the president raised tariffs against China by an additional 50% on Tuesday, bringing the total to 104%.
In response, the Chinese government raised tariffs against the U.S. to 84%.
The president then announced that he raised the total tariffs against the Communist-run country to 125%, citing China’s “lack of respect.”
“Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately,” Trump said on Truth Social.
“At some point hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable,” he added.
Despite slapping China with massive tariffs, Trump said he would institute a 90-day pause on tariffs for over 75 countries since they are actively trying to negotiate with the U.S. instead of retaliating.
“Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” the president said.
As Trending Politics reported, Trump’s decision to pause tariffs led the stock market to surge greatly.
The Dow Jones reportedly surged by 600 points following the president’s announcement. At the same time, the S&P 500 and NASDAQ also reported significant gains.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent discussed the ongoing tariff war between the U.S. and China on Wednesday, urging the Communist country to negotiate.
“It is our strong position that fair trade must be restored,” Bessent said.
“The president is leaving the door open for talks. Now it’s up to Beijing,” he added.
The treasury secretary pointed out that Trump’s strategy is to pave the way for countries to negotiate with the U.S. by using tariffs as leverage.
“This was his strategy all along,” he said. “You might even say he goaded China into a bad position,”
When asked about the market surge on Wednesday, Trump noted that it would set a new “record.”
