During an interview on Kylie Kelce’s “Not Gonna Lie” podcast, Michelle shared candid insights about the challenges of raising her daughters while in the public eye. She emphasized that the most important consideration in her decision was her daughters’ privacy and freedom.
“You are completely unaware of the sacrifice your children make,” Michelle explained, reflecting on how the family’s life was constantly under the spotlight.
Michelle highlighted how difficult it was for her and Barack to raise their two daughters during their formative years while they lived in the White House. She admitted that the experience of growing up in such an environment was far from easy for Sasha and Malia, particularly during their adolescent years.
“I wanted them to have the freedom of not having the eyes of the world on them,” Michelle stated, underscoring the burden her daughters had to bear, as The Economic Times reported.
As a result, Michelle firmly answered “no” when asked if she would ever run for office, reiterating that she did not want to subject her daughters to the spotlight once again.
“The idea of, like, reintroducing my girls to that spotlight at a time when they are only beginning to establish themselves,” she added, conveying her concerns about their development outside of the public eye.
Having lived in the White House for eight years, from January 2009 to January 2017, Michelle remarked that Sasha and Malia had spent more time there than anywhere else.
Reflecting on their childhood, Michelle revealed that her daughters had endured a level of public exposure that most children could never imagine. Despite these challenges, she expressed gratitude for their resilience.
Michelle’s commitment to her daughters’ future and their ability to lead normal lives is a significant factor in her decision to remain out of the political race. She stated that she simply wasn’t interested in politics in the way many may assume, reinforcing that her family comes first.
The conversation also delved into Michelle’s thoughts about expanding the family. While Barack had once considered the possibility of having a third child, Michelle was hesitant.
She explained that while Barack was supportive of the idea, she felt they were blessed with two daughters and didn’t want to risk the challenges of adding another child. “We’ve been blessed with these two daughters,” Michelle said, with a hint of humor about not wanting to have a “wild one.”
Malia, now 26, graduated from Harvard in 2021 and is pursuing a career in film, while Sasha, 23, returned to the University of Southern California. Michelle proudly spoke of how both of her daughters have begun carving their own paths, independent of the intense spotlight they lived under as children.
Despite the ongoing speculation surrounding her future in politics, Michelle has made it clear that she is not interested in running for president. Her focus is on her family, and she believes they have already “served their time” in the public eye. “They’ve already served their time,” Michelle remarked, suggesting that their time in the White House had already been more than enough.
In response to the growing number of people speculating about a potential Michelle Obama presidential bid, the former First Lady emphasized that her decision was not about politics but about her family’s privacy. “I’m not interested in politics in that way,” she stated definitively.
