Authorities were called to a residence at 9:18 a.m. in response to an unresponsive woman. Upon arrival, officers found Aber deceased. The Alexandria Police Department announced that an investigation is underway as part of standard procedure. The Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause and manner of her death.

Aber’s legal career began after she earned her law degree from William and Mary Law School in 2006. She joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the EDVA in 2009 as an assistant U.S. attorney. Over the years, she took on various roles, including serving as counsel to the assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s Criminal Division from 2015 to 2016.

She later became deputy chief of the criminal division in the EDVA, where she handled significant cases. Her extensive legal background led to her nomination as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia in 2021 by then-President Joe Biden. The Senate swiftly confirmed her appointment with unanimous approval.

As U.S. Attorney, Aber oversaw a team of more than 300 employees across four regional divisions in Norfolk, Richmond, Newport News, and Alexandria. Her leadership played a critical role in prosecuting high-profile federal cases.

Aber stepped down from her role on Jan. 20, the same day President Donald Trump was inaugurated for his second term. Upon leaving office, she described her time as U.S. Attorney as an incredible privilege, per Trending Politics.

In her farewell remarks, Aber expressed gratitude to Democratic Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, as well as former President Biden, for selecting her for the position. She also thanked then-Attorney General Merrick Garland for his leadership.

Reflecting on her tenure, Aber emphasized the importance of collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. She noted that building public trust was a key part of her office’s mission.

During her time as U.S. Attorney, Aber was involved in prosecuting a range of cases, including high-profile international crimes. She once stood alongside former Attorney General Merrick Garland and former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to announce charges against Russian nationals.

Her successor, U.S. Attorney Erik S. Siebert, expressed deep sorrow over Aber’s passing. He described her as an exceptional leader, mentor, and prosecutor.

Siebert highlighted Aber’s dedication to justice, stating that her impact on the legal community was immeasurable. He praised her professionalism and the high standards she set in her work.

He also emphasized the lasting legacy Aber leaves behind, noting that her influence extended far beyond her legal accomplishments.

Aber’s death comes just two months after her departure from office, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding her passing.
