Trump to Sign EO to Abolish Department of Education: Report
President Donald Trump is reportedly ready to sign an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education, aiming to return control of education to states and families.
The White House describes the decision as part of an effort to “turn over education to families instead of bureaucracies” while addressing what the administration characterizes as failing American students.

The recently confirmed Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, issued a memo supporting the administration’s plans, stating she would oversee a “new era of accountability” during the department’s final days.
Her appointment on March 3 came with the understanding that her role would eventually be eliminated.
“The reality of our education system is stark, and the American people have elected President Trump to make significant changes in Washington,” McMahon said in her March 3 memo.
She described the elimination of “bureaucratic bloat” as a “momentous final mission” to be accomplished quickly and responsibly.
White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Harrison Fields emphasized concerns about educational performance, telling Fox News, “NAEP scores reveal a national crisis — our children are falling behind.”
Fields added, “Over the past four years, Democrats have allowed millions of illegal minors into the country, straining school resources and diverting focus from American students.”
He also cited what he called “anti-American CRT and DEI indoctrination” as factors “harming our most vulnerable.”
Trump has consistently advocated for returning education to state control, emphasizing school choice as a priority. “I want every parent in America to be empowered to send their child to public, private, charter, or faith-based school of their choice,” he stated.
“The time for universal school choice has come. As we return education to the states, I will use every power I have to give parents this right.”
The White House cited poor student outcomes despite billions in federal education spending, including 13 Baltimore high schools where no students tested proficient in mathematics in 2023.
Officials also pointed to “$226 million in grants under the Comprehensive Centers Program that forced radical agendas onto states and systems, including race-based discrimination and gender identity ideology.”
Bravo! Congress should support President Trump’s bold agenda by passing my bill, HR 899 to Abolish the Department of Education. We could also use recisions and the budget reconciliation process, which only require 51 votes in the Senate, to back him up.https://t.co/bjLxGdmPiH pic.twitter.com/zG7a4sBBw9

Fox reported that the looming executive order comes as critics of the department reference the “Nation’s Report Card,” the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress, which showed stagnant math scores for eighth-graders compared to 2022 and a 2-point drop in reading scores at both fourth and eighth-grade levels.
Former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos supported the move in a recent op-ed, arguing that the U.S. needs a “complete reset” prioritizing students, beginning with closing a department she claims has focused more on diversity, equity and inclusion mandates than educational fundamentals. “In report card language, what was a D- is now an F,” DeVos wrote.
Fox reported that the American Federation of Teachers has strongly opposed the decision, citing an NPR/PBS News/Marist Poll that found more than 60 percent of Americans “strongly oppose” eliminating the agency.
“The Department of Education, and the laws it is supposed to execute, has one major purpose: to level the playing field and fill opportunity gaps to help every child in America succeed,” said American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, according to the outlet.
“Trying to abolish it — which, by the way, only Congress can do — sends a message that the president doesn’t care about opportunity for all kids. Maybe he cares about it for his own kids or his friends’ kids or his donors’ kids — but not all kids.”
Some congressional support exists for dismantling the department.
Fox noted that Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) introduced legislation on January 31 to eliminate it by December 2026, arguing that “Unelected bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., should not be in charge of our children’s intellectual and moral development.
President Trump just signed an order to ABOLISH the Department of Education.
