Bill Burr Doubles Down, Claims Elon Musk Gave a ‘Shoutout to Hitler’
Comedian Bill Burr has caused a stir by doubling down on his false claim that Elon Musk performed a Nazi salute in January during the celebration of President Donald Trump’s second inauguration.
The controversy began after Burr’s appearance on The Breakfast Club, a popular radio show hosted by Charlamagne Tha God. During the segment, Charlamagne pointed out that Musk is “the richest man in the world” and noted that there is little anyone can do to challenge him.
Burr, however, seemed unconcerned with Musk’s wealth and went on to accuse the tech mogul of supporting Adolf Hitler.
“I don’t get how this guy could give a shoutout to Hitler,” Burr remarked, referring to Musk’s controversial gesture at the event. He went on to express disbelief, considering Musk’s immigrant background and the sacrifices made by veterans in the fight against Hitler during World War II.
Burr’s comments quickly gained attention on social media, where he doubled down on his claims, suggesting that Musk’s actions were in direct conflict with American values. He made a point to emphasize that not all Republicans supported such behavior, but Musk’s gesture was unacceptable.
The comedian continued, “None of it tracks how you could be the ‘support the troops,’ ‘America, love it or leave it,’ and then this guy comes in and does that.” Burr’s words appeared to align with his ongoing frustration over the supposed lack of response from liberals, whom he claimed had failed to take a stronger stance on Musk’s alleged salute.
However, the accusations made by Burr have no basis in fact. In January, during a Trump event at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., Musk was filmed making a gesture that some mistakenly interpreted as a Nazi salute, as Breitbart News reported.
Musk, however, clarified the gesture, explaining that he was simply placing his hand over his heart and expressing goodwill.
This gesture was not a Nazi salute, as some outlets and public figures had suggested. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a prominent anti-hate organization, issued a statement confirming that, while the moment was awkward, there was no malintent behind Musk’s actions.
The ADL emphasized that the gesture did not carry the historical connotations that Burr and others implied.
Despite this clarification, Burr’s comments continued to stir controversy. His continued insistence on the false claim has raised questions about the potential impact of spreading misinformation, particularly among those who may not be aware of the facts.
The media’s initial reporting on the incident, which wrongly labeled Musk’s gesture as a Nazi salute, further contributed to the confusion. It is unclear how many people were misled by the inaccurate claims, but the incident highlights the dangers of misinformation, particularly when prominent figures perpetuate false narratives.
Burr’s remarks also reflect the ongoing cultural divide in the United States. His comments have deepened the political divide, particularly regarding the relationship between American values, military service, and the actions of public figures.
The false accusation against Musk raises broader concerns about the role of public figures in shaping political discourse. Burr, a comedian known for his sharp wit, has garnered attention for his opinions on politics, but his willingness to perpetuate a false narrative raises questions about the responsibility of entertainers in the public sphere.
In the days following Burr’s appearance on The Breakfast Club, his comments were widely criticized by those who viewed his remarks as harmful to political discourse. Some commentators warned that perpetuating falsehoods about influential figures like Musk could further polarize the nation.
