Trump Blasts Rep Massie Over Spending Bill Standoff, Compares to Liz Cheney
President Donald Trump is calling for a primary challenge against Rep. Thomas Massie, (R-KY), criticizing the congressman for being a “grandstander” and comparing him to former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY).
In a Truth Social post on Monday night, Trump pledged to “lead the charge” to unseat Massie, who has signaled opposition to a government funding measure backed by the president.
Massie, known for his hardline stance against government spending, has made it clear he will vote against the latest continuing resolution (CR), a temporary measure to keep the government funded, according to Fox News. Trump has urged Republicans to support the bill, but Massie dismissed the idea, arguing that the party is once again falling for empty promises of future spending cuts.
“Unless I get a lobotomy Monday that causes me to forget what I’ve witnessed the past 12 years, I’ll be a NO on the CR this week,” Massie wrote on X. “It amazes me that my colleagues and many of the public fall for the lie that we will fight another day.”

Trump, who has played a central role in reshaping the Republican Party, condemned Massie’s opposition and accused him of being a disruptive force in Congress.
“Congressman Thomas Massie, of beautiful Kentucky, is an automatic ‘NO’ vote on just about everything, despite the fact that he has always voted for Continuing Resolutions in the past,” Trump wrote. “HE SHOULD BE PRIMARIED, and I will lead the charge against him.”
“He’s just another GRANDSTANDER, who’s too much trouble, and not worth the fight. He reminds me of Liz Chaney [sic] before her historic, record-breaking fall (loss!).”
“The people of Kentucky won’t stand for it, just watch. DO I HAVE ANY TAKERS???”

Trump’s criticism of Massie came as part of a broader message in which he praised the House Freedom Caucus for rejecting Democratic spending policies.
“Thank you to the House Freedom Caucus for just delivering a big blow to the Radical Left Democrats and their desire to raise Taxes and SHUT OUR COUNTRY DOWN!” Trump wrote. “They hate America and all it stands for.”
“That’s why they allowed MILLIONS of Criminals to invade our Nation. Sometimes it takes great courage to do the right thing.”
After blasting Massie, Trump reiterated his support for the Freedom Caucus, adding, “Anyway, thank you again to the House Freedom Caucus for your very important vote. We need to buy some time in order to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE. Unite and Win!!!”
Massie has not directly responded to Trump’s attack, but in a post on X prior to Trump’s remarks, he dismissed any concerns about being primaried.
“Someone thinks they can control my voting card by threatening my re-election,” he wrote.
“Guess what? Doesn’t work on me.”
“Three times I’ve had a challenger who tried to be more MAGA than me. None busted 25% because my constituents prefer transparency and principles over blind allegiance.”

This is not the first time Trump has called for Massie’s removal from office. In 2020, the congressman opposed a $2 trillion COVID-19 relief package, prompting Trump to demand his expulsion from the Republican Party, according to Fox News.
“Looks like a third rate Grandstander named @RepThomasMassie, a Congressman from, unfortunately, a truly GREAT State, Kentucky, wants to vote against the new Save Our Workers Bill in Congress,” Trump wrote at the time, per the outlet. “He just wants the publicity.”
Despite Trump’s opposition, Massie won his primary that year by a landslide. Then in 2022, Trump reversed course and endorsed Massie just before the congressman secured another decisive GOP primary victory.
Massive also caused waves when he endorsed Trump for president in October after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis dropped out of the race.
