Medical Crisis Strikes GOP Sen—Recovery Timeline Unclear

GOP Sen Kevin Cramer Suffers Brain Bleed After Brutal Fall on Ice

North Dakota Sen. Kevin Cramer (R) is grateful to be alive after suffering a severe concussion and a brain bleed following a fall on black ice outside his home in Bismarck.

On Monday, Cramer revealed that he had slipped and fallen while walking outside on Sunday, striking his head on a hardened, sloped hill, according to Trending Politics. In a Facebook post, the senator detailed the severity of his injuries and his lack of recollection of the incident until waking up in the hospital.

Cramer explained that he had been heading to retrieve a piece of conduit from his dock when he stepped on ice and fell hard. His injuries required medical intervention, including staples to close a laceration and he remained in the hospital overnight for observation.

“Late yesterday afternoon, I walked to my backyard intending to retrieve a piece of conduit which came off my dock and was laying on the ice. While walking on the hill down to the dock, I stepped on ice and evidently fell hard, hitting the back of my head,” Cramer wrote.

“After seeing the emergency doctor, taking some tests, including a CT Scan, and seeing a neurologist, I was diagnosed with a severe concussion, a seizure, and a slight brain bleed.”

Medical professionals have advised Cramer to rest and focus on recovery, leaving uncertainty about when he will be able to return to Washington, D.C., for Senate duties. While he noted some improvement in his condition, he continued to struggle with significant headaches.

“The wound on my head wouldn’t stop oozing, so the doctor punched a couple of staples on the laceration and admitted me. I had a good night’s sleep before getting a second CT scan,” he shared.

Cramer received medical care to treat his head wound

“I am better today with only a slight brain bleed and pretty bad headaches.”

Throughout his recovery, Cramer has received an outpouring of support from friends, constituents and colleagues. He took a moment to express his gratitude for the well wishes and also acknowledged the unwavering support of his wife, Kris.

“Every day, Kris texts our family tips on how to care for our brains. She is a strong advocate for decisions which promote brain health,” he wrote.

“I need to pay more attention to her. I am grateful for her and the professionals at Sanford who take such good care of me.”

“God is good!”

Cramer has been a staunch conservative voice in the Senate since winning his seat in 2018 after defeating Democrat Heidi Heitkamp. Prior to his tenure in the upper chamber, he served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, according to TP.

An early supporter of President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, Cramer secured the president’s endorsement in his own successful reelection bid, in which he won comfortably with 66.5 percent of the vote, according to NBC.

In 2024, the senator also made headlines when his son, Ian Cramer, was sentenced to 28 years in prison after being found guilty of causing a sheriff’s deputy’s death in a crash while attempting to evade law enforcement, according to Fox News.
