Elon Musk’s Top DOGE Staffer Quits After Controversial Social Media Posts Emerge
A high-ranking member of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has resigned following revelations about his controversial social media history, just hours after gaining unprecedented access to trillion-dollar Treasury payment systems.
Some X users have taken the old posts incredibly seriously, with one outraged onlooker dubbing the member “one of Elon’s Hitler Youth DOGE employees.”
Marko Elez, 25, stepped down from his position Thursday after the Wall Street Journal uncovered his connections to social media posts promoting what the outlet described to be racist ideologies and eugenics.
The resignation came shortly after Elez had been granted access to $5 trillion in Treasury payment systems alongside colleague Tom Krause, following an eleventh-hour court hearing that granted the controversial authorization.
The posts, which appeared on a now-deleted X account, included statements advocating for the repeal of the Civil Rights Act and supporting “eugenic immigration policy.”
Additional posts expressed ethnic prejudices, with declarations such as “You could not pay me to marry outside of my ethnicity” and “normalize Indian hate.”
The account also contained statements about international conflicts, including a post suggesting indifference to the destruction of both Gaza and Israel.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt confirmed Elez’s resignation.
Prior to his DOGE appointment, Elez, a Rutgers University computer science graduate, had worked across several Musk enterprises including SpaceX, Starlink and X, specializing in artificial intelligence.
Daily Mail reported that the incident has drawn sharp criticism from lawmakers, including Virginia Congressman Don Beyer, who called the situation “a scandal.”
Beyer expressed particular concern about Elez’s access to sensitive information, including Social Security data and tax returns of American citizens.
The congressman’s rebuke highlighted the stark contrast between traditional government hiring practices and Musk’s approach to staffing the newly formed agency.
“This is why we have a process to vet civil servants, and why we hire and promote them based on merit, not their personal relationship to some rich guy,” Beyer stated, calling for the termination of those involved in Elez’s hiring and the complete dissolution of DOGE.
The controversy emerges as DOGE faces its first major challenge since its establishment as an agency dedicated to eliminating government waste and overspending.
The Justice Department has already implemented restrictions, allowing only two individuals “read-only” access to the Treasury system, with strict conditions prohibiting the sharing of discovered information with colleagues.
The incident has intensified scrutiny over Musk’s staffing choices for DOGE, which has recruited notably young personnel.
Daily Mail noted that the agency currently employs six men between ages 19 and 25, including Edward Coristine, the youngest at 19, and Berkeley graduate Gavin Kliger, 25.
Four team members–Coristine, Akash Bobba (21), Ethan Shaotran (22) and Luke Farritor (23)–have been granted A-suite level clearance, providing them extensive access to physical spaces and IT systems, per the outlet.
Among these young appointees, several have already secured significant positions of authority.
Gautier Cole Killian has joined the agency on a volunteer basis, while others have been granted access to restricted areas of the General Services Administration buildings and IT systems.
WIRED reported earlier this week that some team members have been designated as “experts” in their respective fields, despite their limited professional experience.

Despite mounting criticism regarding the youth of his appointees, Musk defended the selections on X, stating, “Time to confess: Media reports saying that DOGE has some of world’s best software engineers are in fact true.”
The statement comes as the agency continues to expand its influence and authority within federal institutions.
