Trump Administration Orders Federal Workers to Remove Pronouns from Email Signatures
In a move aligned with President Donald Trump’s ongoing efforts to reshape federal government policies, federal workers across multiple agencies have been directed to remove pronouns from their email signatures and other official documents.
The directive follows two executive orders signed by Trump on his first day back in office, aimed at limiting “woke” diversity and equity programs within the federal government.
Internal memos obtained by ABC News revealed that federal employees at agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Department of Energy and the Department of Transportation were instructed to comply with the new policy by Friday, January 31, 2025.
The message from Jason Bonander, the CDC’s Chief Information Officer, emphasized that pronouns and other non-essential information must be removed from employee email signatures by 5 p.m. ET on Friday.
“Pronouns and any other information not permitted in the policy must be removed from CDC/ATSDR employee signatures by 5 p.m. ET on Friday,” Bonander wrote in a communication sent to staff, per Trending Politics.
The Department of Energy sent out a similar notice on Thursday, urging employees to comply with Trump’s executive order requiring the removal of “DEI language in Federal discourse, communications and publications.”
The push to remove pronouns from federal documents follows a broader initiative by the Trump administration to reverse policies implemented during the Biden administration.
The move to eliminate pronouns is part of a broader effort to address what the administration refers to as “woke” ideology, which has become increasingly associated with diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs in the federal workplace.
The use of pronouns in email signatures became widespread in the 2010s, driven by LGBT advocacy groups, universities and corporations encouraging individuals to share their gender pronouns, according to Trending Politics. The practice gained further traction as discussions around gender identity and “non-binary” recognition grew in the public sphere.
The Human Rights Campaign and other organizations played a key role in promoting pronoun disclosure.
While the pronoun shift has been embraced by many liberals as a step toward inclusivity, it has faced significant pushback from conservatives who argue it amounts to unnecessary ideological signaling, the outlet notes.
Critics of the policy have argued that requiring pronoun disclosure is both divisive and a form of political correctness.
This new directive is one of several steps taken by the president to reshape federal policies in accordance with his administration’s values. Trump signed Executive Order 14168, titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” earlier this month.
It calls for the recognition of only two immutable biological sexes—male and female—in federal policies and documents, a move that is expected to impact various aspects of government administration, from education to workplace rights.
The order also rescinds prior executive orders that promoted gender identity recognition and disbands the White House Gender Policy Council. It mandates that federal agencies implement policies based on biological sex and restricts government-issued identifications to reflect only the biological sex of individuals.
