Internet Divided After Carrie Underwood Breaks Silence on Upcoming Performance at Trump’s Inauguration: ‘I Love Our Country and am Honored’
Country music superstar Carrie Underwood has confirmed she will perform at Donald Trump’s 2025 presidential inauguration, igniting fierce debate among her fanbase and the broader music community.
“I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” Underwood said in a statement.
“I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future,” the 41-year-old music legend told USA Today.
The Grammy-winning artist will perform “America The Beautiful” alongside The Armed Forces Chorus and The United States Naval Academy Glee Club following Trump’s oath of office and the swearing-in of Vice President-elect JD Vance, Daily Mail reported.
The announcement, however, has created a firestorm on social media, with fans deeply divided over Underwood’s decision.
Daily Mail highlighted that the controversy is particularly noteworthy given Underwood’s previous attempts to maintain political neutrality and her past participation in a 2017 Country Music Awards (CMAs) skit that poked fun at Trump’s social media habits.
During that memorable CMA broadcast, Underwood and co-host Brad Paisley performed a parody version of her hit song “Before He Cheats,” with lyrics targeting Trump’s tweeting habits.
Paisley’s performance included lines like “Right now, he’s probably in his PJs, watching cable news, reaching for his cellphone,” and referenced Trump’s notorious “covfefe” tweet, drawing laughs from the audience.
The apparent shift in stance has left many fans questioning Underwood’s motivations.
In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, the American Idol winner expressed her preference to “stay far out of politics if possible, at least in public, because nobody wins,” adding that political issues aren’t simply “black and white.”
The announcement has created strange bedfellows in the country music world, putting Underwood in the same conversation as outspoken Trump supporters Kid Rock and Jason Aldean.
Social media reactions have ranged from fierce criticism to enthusiastic support, with some fans even dragging Taylor Swift into the debate, referencing her previous support of Trump’s opponents.

Underwood’s call for “unity” in her statement to USA Today has seemingly done little to quell the heated backlash across social media platforms, according to Daily Mail.
The outlet highlighted that the reactions on X have been particularly intense, with comments ranging from “Disgusting, thought she had morals. It was all a sham,” to more supportive messages praising her as a “solid choice.”
Some users have even used the opportunity to critique broader Hollywood culture, with one commenting, “Nice to know that she’s not a Hollywood blood sucking Vampire.”
The selection of Underwood represents a significant coup for the incoming administration, securing a mainstream, multi-platinum selling artist for the inauguration ceremony.
Her participation adds a new dimension to the ongoing discussion about the role of artists in political events and the potential consequences of such appearances on their careers.
The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for Jan. 20, 2025, at noon, where Underwood will take center stage in what promises to be one of the most talked-about presidential inauguration performances in recent memory.
