Michelle Obama Faces Backlash Over New Year’s Message
Michelle Obama, former First Lady, encountered significant criticism on social media after posting a New Year’s message on Instagram that wished her followers “Happy Holidays,” Fox News reported.
In her remarks, Obama expressed empathy for those grappling with anxiety and uncertainty, emphasizing the importance of hope amid difficulties. However, critics interpreted her comments as veiled references to the recent elections in which her preferred candidates faced setbacks. They specifically noted her comments regarding “a difficult few months” as indicative of their perception that she was lamenting the election victory of Donald Trump.
“Happy holidays, everyone. I know it’s been a difficult few months for so many of us, and that folks are feeling a little bit anxious and uncertain,” Obama says in the video. “But even during these tough times, there are plenty of reasons to stay hopeful.”
Supporters of Trump voiced their disappointment over Obama’s remarks. They suggested that her words seemed to be an indirect critique of the election outcome. Commenters highlighted a stark contrast between her portrayal of struggles and their own optimism regarding the future under the new administration.
“A difficult few years from the damage the Biden administration has caused!” wrote one commenter critical of Obama and Biden. “Things have never looked better since Trum won the election! The people have the power! Not even all those celebrities could change that!”
“We are certain it won’t be worse than your husband’s administration or the Biden administration,” said another. “That we are CERTAIN.”
Conversely, many of Obama’s supporters praised her message, providing an outpouring of positive feedback and gratitude for her acknowledgment of the trials faced by many during the tumultuous election season.
“Michelle, America is excited about what’s to come: a new horizon and prosperity for the nation. 2025-2029! No anxiety here,” a third commenter replied.
The Obamas were seen as actively campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 elections, with Michelle Obama delivering numerous influential speeches.
Historically, Michelle Obama has expressed strong criticism against Trump, labeling him a “skilled con man” who exacerbated societal issues, Fox News reported. Following Trump’s electoral victory, the Obamas issued a statement that, while congratulating him, also shared their disappointment regarding the election’s results. They called for unity, emphasizing the need for grace and mutual understanding within a diverse nation, even towards those with opposing political perspectives.
“In a country as big and diverse as ours, we won’t always see eye-to-eye on everything,” the Obamas said at the time, per Fox News. “But progress requires us to extend good faith and grace – even to people with whom we deeply disagree.”
