President-elect Donald Trump has tapped tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and business leader Vivek Ramaswamy to spearhead a revolutionary non-governmental initiative aimed at streamlining federal operations.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) comes with an unusual feature: a predetermined expiration date of July 4, 2026.
Sometimes it's fine to sunset an organization. Better than trying to keep it going for no reason once the purpose has been fulfilled.

Ramaswamy, known for his entrepreneurial prowess, took to X to announce the initiative’s finite lifespan, stating, “Most government projects should come with a clear expiry date. That’s why we set one for DOGE: July 4, 2026.”
Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, endorsed this sunset provision, declaring that DOGE’s “final step is to delete itself.”
The organization, operating outside traditional governmental frameworks, will focus on identifying and eliminating bureaucratic inefficiencies, excessive regulations and wasteful spending across federal agencies.
Trump, in his November announcement, likened DOGE to “The Manhattan Project of our time,” emphasizing its potential impact on governmental reform.
“Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies – Essential to the ‘Save America’ Movement,” Trump stated during the initial announcement.
Since its inception, DOGE has already begun highlighting examples of government waste through social media platforms.
The organization recently spotlighted the Pentagon’s failure to pass its audit for the seventh consecutive year.
DOGE called attention to the National Institute of Health’s $1.8 billion expenditure on racism studies in another notable exposure, including specific allocations such as $125,000 for “Examining Anti-Racist Healing in Nature” and $516,000 for studying the “Effects of Racism on Brain and Pathways to Health Disparities.”
The initiative represents a unique approach to government reform, combining private sector efficiency expertise with public sector oversight.
Working in conjunction with the White House and Office of Management & Budget, DOGE aims to introduce what Trump describes as “an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before.”
This unprecedented partnership between two of America’s most prominent business figures and the incoming administration marks a significant departure from traditional government efficiency programs, notably distinguished by its self-imposed deadline and commitment to its own dissolution.
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has surprisingly voiced support for DOGE, stating “Elon Musk is right” following his own criticism of Pentagon spending practices.
“The Pentagon, with a budget of $886 billion, just failed its 7th audit in a row. It’s lost track of billions,” Sanders said.
He noted that only 13 senators opposed the previous year’s defense budget, emphasizing the need for change.
Prominent voices including Matt Gaetz weighed in on X following Sanders’ shock post. “Welcome home, Bernie,” the former Attorney General nominee posted.
“Glad you realized Elon Musk is not the problem,” Collin Rugg noted as well.
