Sudden Loss: State Senate Candidate’s Life Cut Short by Alleged DUI

Arizona’s John McLean Killed in DUI Crash

John McLean, a Democratic candidate for Arizona’s State Senate District 17, tragically lost his life in a suspected DUI-related incident in Tucson. The crash occurred when 27-year-old Michael Martin Creel allegedly ran a stop sign, colliding with McLean’s vehicle. Following the collision, Creel has been charged with manslaughter and aggravated DUI and is currently held at the Pima County Jail. According to a police report, both excessive speed and impairment were significant factors contributing to the fatal accident.

McLean’s campaign was in full swing, as he had recently conceded defeat in the election against Republican incumbent Vince Leach, trailing by over 3,000 votes, per the New York Post. Leach expressed his sorrow over McLean’s death, describing him as an honorable individual who dedicated himself to public service. “John was a good man who conducted himself honorably as a candidate. My deepest condolences go out to John’s family and friends in this most difficult time.” Leach stated.

The Arizona Senate Democrats issued a formal statement mourning McLean’s death, highlighting his commitment to enhancing the lives of Arizonans. Governor Katie Hobbs also joined in paying tribute, underscoring McLean’s unwavering dedication to public service and his contributions to the community. “John was a true public servant who cared deeply about Arizona. He always wanted to do what was best for his community, and he will be remembered for that. This is a tragic loss, and my heart breaks for his family and loved ones. Sending all my love to those who knew him,” saicHobbs.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing, with law enforcement officials seeking further evidence to clarify the details. Authorities indicated that a thorough analysis is being conducted to ascertain additional factors that may have contributed to the accident.

Creel’s criminal history is also under scrutiny, as he previously faced a DUI charge that was dismissed in December 2023.

Friends and family of McLean have shared heartfelt tributes, honoring his legacy as a public servant. In the wake of this tragedy, both political and civil leaders are reminded of the importance of vigilance on the roads, particularly concerning issues of driving under the influence.
