Riley Gaines Destroys AOC for Removing Pronouns in X Bio Despite Advocating for Trans-Identifying Athletes in Women’s Sports: ‘Don’t Forget Who the Compliant, Virtue-Signaling Sheep Were’
In a move that sparked widespread social media attention, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s X bio underwent a subtle but significant change – the removal of her “she/her” pronouns.
Former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines, a vocal advocate for women’s sports, seized the opportunity to highlight what she sees as a shift in the cultural tide.
Gaines, who has emerged as a prominent voice in the debate over trans-identifying athletes in women’s sports, took to X with multiple posts addressing the congressional representative’s bio modification.
“They’ll pretend they never embraced (or even celebrated) the insanity. Don’t forget who the compliant, virtue-signaling sheep were,” Gaines wrote, responding to reports that Ocasio-Cortez had removed the pronouns before May.
The social media exchange highlights a broader ongoing debate about so-called transgender rights and women’s sports, an issue where Ocasio-Cortez and Gaines stand on opposing sides.
Some X users have speculated that Ocasio-Cortez’s removal of pronouns in her bio is part of a plot to distance herself from other members in her party and the extreme progressive movement as a whole.
The Post Millennial reported that the progressive firebrand took to social media Monday evening, recording a series of direct-to-camera videos where she attributed the Democratic Party’s electoral defeats to what she characterized as a lack of authenticity among candidates.
The rebuke comes as Democrats grapple with significant losses across the board, including President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in both the Electoral College and popular vote, while Republicans secured majority control of both the Senate and House of Representatives.
“A lot of voters really don’t like fake people, and they’re sick and tired of fake politicians,” Ocasio-Cortez declared in her video message, suggesting that voters had punished Democratic candidates for perceived insincerity in their campaign messaging.
The New York congresswoman specifically targeted what she views as opportunistic shifts in messaging post-election, particularly regarding LGBTQ+ issues.
“What I actually think is worse is saying something you don’t believe,” she stated, addressing her fellow Democrats.
“If during the entire time of the campaign season, you’re saying that you’re down with trans people or the LGBT community and then you lose an election and then the next day you say all that stuff was wrong, I actually think what people are more upset about is someone was doing something they didn’t believe and just saying something.”
Her criticism raises questions about consistency in Democratic messaging and campaign promises, as she pointedly asked, “If you actually weren’t about that life, why did you campaign as though you were?”
She emphasized this as “the actual core issue of the problem.”
The internet, however, has receipts.

Fox News reported that the Democratic congresswoman has consistently supported trans-identifying inclusion in women’s athletics, recently criticizing Green Party vice presidential candidate Butch Ware for his stance against these athletes competing in women’s sports.
Ocasio-Cortez’s advocacy extends beyond social media statements.
Following the Biden-Harris administration’s Title IX reforms in April, which addressed gender identity protections in educational institutions, the congresswoman argued the changes didn’t go far enough.
Fox noted that she publicly criticized the administration’s decision to allow schools discretion in barring transgender athletes from women’s and girls’ sports, calling it “indefensible and embarrassing.”
The congresswoman’s legislative record reflects her position.
She co-sponsored the Equality Act in 2019, which included provisions that would require public schools to permit trans-identifying athletes to compete on teams aligned with their gender identity.
Fox added that in March 2023, she joined fellow Democrats in proposing a transgender bill of rights that called for federal protection of transgender athletes’ right to participate in sports according to their gender identity.
Gaines, who tied with trans-identifying athlete Lia Thomas at the 2022 NCAA championships, brings a different perspective to the debate.
At a recent Trump campaign rally, she shared her experience of being required to share locker room facilities with Thomas.
“There are no words to describe the violation and the betrayal, the humiliation that we felt,” Gaines said, as reported by Fox.
The former swimmer now leads a lawsuit against the NCAA, alleging violations of Title IX rights due to the organization’s gender identity policies.
The legal action, filed in Atlanta’s U.S. District Court, details various incidents including the controversial fifth-place trophy allocation at the 2022 championships.
The debate has created fissures within the Democratic Party, with some members distancing themselves from full support of trans-identifying athletes’ inclusion in women’s sports.
Fox reported that representatives Seth Moulton and Tom Suozzi have publicly expressed opposition, despite criticism from party allies.
