Trump Says New Senate Majority Leader ‘Will Do An Outstanding Job’
After Sen. John Thune (R-SD) was elected as the next Senate Republican leader, President-elect Donald Trump sent his congratulations, insisting that he “will do an outstanding job” in his new role.
“Congratulations to Senator John Thune, the Newly Elected Senate Majority Leader. He moves quickly, and will do an outstanding job,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.
He also expressed “looking forward” to working with Thune, along with other senators.
“I look forward to working with him, and Senators John Barrasso (Senate Majority Whip), Tom Cotton (Senate Republican Conference Chairman), Shelley Moore Capito (Senate Republican Policy Committee Chairman), James Lankford (Republican Conference Vice Chairman), and Tim Scott (National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman) to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” he added.
Trump’s praise of Thune is based on his numerous accomplishments as a politician. The 63-year-old currently holds the position of Senate Republican whip, the second-highest leadership role within the GOP.
His extensive leadership experience includes serving as the chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee from 2009 to 2011 and later as the conference chair from 2012 to 2018, according to CBS News.
Thune has had a long and varied career in public service. He was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004, following his tenure in the House of Representatives.
Before entering Congress, Thune gained significant experience in leadership roles, including serving as the executive director of the South Dakota Republican Party and working at the Small Business Administration under President Ronald Reagan.
While previously critical of Trump, Thune vowed to work with the future administration to ensure that the party’s legislative agenda aligns with the future president’s priorities. He shared his eagerness to work with Trump.
“I’m excited to get to work with this team right away,” he said.
After his victory, other Republicans who were eyeing the position also shared Trump’s optimism, stating that Thune was the right person for the job.
“While it isn’t the result we hoped for, I will do everything possible to make sure John Thune is successful in accomplishing President Trump’s agenda,” Republican Florida Sen. Rick Scott said in a statement, per Fox News.
“We are united and prepared to enact President Trump’s agenda on day one, and I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to take advantage of the opportunities we will have next year to confirm nominees, address our national debt, extend the Trump tax cuts, and reverse the Biden-Harris administration’s disastrous border policies,” said Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn.
Thune is set to take over for current Senate Republican Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) next year. McConnell, who has held the position for many years, chose not to run for another term.
