Mexican Mayor Assassinated and Decapitated: Severed Head Placed on Top of His Truck in Gruesome Display
A Mexican mayor suffered a horrible demise as his severed head was left on the roof of his pickup truck and his body was left inside the vehicle.
Alejandro Arcos had just taken office six days prior to his assassination. He was elected mayor of the southwestern city of Chilpancingo, which is home to around 280,000 people.
Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch told reporters that on the day of his assassination, Arcos did not request security detail, despite local reports that he requested extra protection.
“The mayor was going to Petaquillas for a meeting alone,” he said, per Aljazeera. “We know that he was going to a specific meeting, he was not accompanied, communication was lost in the community, and the discovery [of his body] was made hours later.”
After his death, several pictures made their way onto social media, appearing to show Arcos’ headless body laying in the passenger seat of the truck, partially covered by a blanket and his severed head sitting on top of the truck’s roof.
His funeral was held on Monday.
“His loss mourns the entire Guerrero society and fills us with indignation,” Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado wrote in a statement, according to Fox News Digital.
The national leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, Alejandro Moreno, said that Arcos’ death followed the fatal shooting of the new city government’s secretary, Francisco Tapia, who was killed three days prior.
“They had been in office less than a week,” Moreno wrote on social media. “They were young and honest public servants who were seeking progress for their community.”
To look into the murders of Arcos and Tapia, Moreno urged the federal attorney general’s office to take charge of the investigation, citing “the situation of ungovernability in Guerrero.”
Prior to his death, the 43-year-old made several social media posts depicting his response after Hurricane Jogn ripped through the area last month.
Chilpancingo, which is the capital of the state of Guerrero, is known for its violence and has become one of the most dangerous states for aspiring and newly elected officials.
Leading up to Mexico’s June 2 election, at least six political candidates were killed in Guerrero.
In the wake of Arcos’ assassination, Harfuch stated on Tuesday that four mayors have appealed for protection.
Two drug gangs, the Ardillos and the Tlacos, have been engaging in violent turf wars, which have led to numerous gruesome killings and several high-profile scandals.
A former mayor was expelled from her party after video surfaced of her reportedly meeting with gang leaders inside of a restaurant.
In 2023, the Ardillos gang openly staged a demonstration, seized a government armored vehicle, and took 10 police officers and members of the National Guard, along with three federal and state officials hostage, to secure the release of their arrested associates, according to Fox News Digital.
The demonstration lasted for two days, blocking traffic between Mexico City and Acapulco.
