New York Harlem Assemblyman Eddie Gibbs was arrested on Thursday by the NYPD after a car stop in Manhattan.
Sources informed the New York Post that the ex-offender’s car was pulled over by NYPD’s Strategic Response Group in East Harlem on Thursday.
Witnesses told Politico that about 11 police cars pulled up as he was sitting with his brother present. Witnesses confirmed to the outlet that he was taken away in handcuffs.
He was at the 25th Precinct on Thursday afternoon. The circumstances behind what led NYPD to take him into custody are currently unknown.
City & State New York reached out to Gibbs’ office about the incident.
“We can’t comment, and we don’t have any information, actually. Our staff just went out to see what’s happening,” Gibbs’ staffer said. “There was something wrong, so we’re just finding out ourselves, so we don’t know what’s happening.”
The outlet notes that this is not the first time he has been in trouble with the law. As a teenager, Gibbs spent three years in prison for manslaughter due to a shooting incident, which he claimed was in self-defense. When initially interviewed, Gibbs bragged about rapping with Biggie Smalls and shared what it was like to be on Riker’s Island.
He became the first person to be elected to the state legislature to serve with a prison record in 2022.
He was recently accused of illegally terminating an employee who had health issues that resulted in the loss of his leg. In a lawsuit filed in June, Keith Lily claimed that Gibbs fired him while he was in the hospital for several weeks being treated.
Gibbs also stirred up controversy when he proposed giving $2,600 to newly released prisoners.
“Every year, thousands of individuals return to our communities, often with little more than the clothes on their backs,” he said at the time. “This isn’t just about financial assistance. It’s about dignity, stability, and reducing the likelihood of re-offense. By offering this support, we’re not only aiding individuals but also investing in the safety and prosperity of our communities.”
The bill was defeated.
He also faced criticism for falsely claiming to have the endorsement of Democratic State Rep. Jerry Nadler.
He was re-elected to the 68th District in June.
Gibbs is a close ally of New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who was charged on five federal counts last week, as TTOA previously reported.
