Elon Musk Punches Back After Gavin Newsom Signs Bill Making Memes, Parody ‘Illegal’ in California
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Elon Musk have been in an ongoing feud that started because of a parody ad for Democrats.
Musk had posted this mockery ad back in July, and Newsom immediately had problems with it.
Now, Newsom is back in the spotlight after signing AB-2655; a bill intended to “combat deepfake election content” like the so-called example Musk had posted.
“Governor Gavin Newsom today signed three measures to remove deceptive content from large online platforms, increase accountability, and better inform voters,” the California Democrat’s website reads.
AB-2655 “requires large online platforms to remove or label deceptive and digitally altered or created content related to elections during specified periods,” per the site.
It also requires platforms like X to “provide mechanisms” to report such content.
On Tuesday, Newsom announced his signing of AB-2655, stating that now parody ads like the one Musk reposted would be “illegal.”
“You can no longer knowingly distribute an ad or other election communications that contain materially deceptive content — including deepfakes,” he continued in his post on X.
